Key takeaways

  • Arrive at security 60 to 75 minutes before the earliest entry you are eligible for.
  • Ride the headliner you do not hold a pass for. Book your first Lightning Lane for 10:00 AM or later.
  • Two rides before 10:00 AM is a good rope drop. Three is a great one.

The timeline

  1. 1T-75 min: leave the hotel. Disney transport and parking both take longer than the map says.
  2. 2T-60 min: through security, at the tapstiles. Have everyone's ticket loaded in the app or on a MagicBand.
  3. 3T-30 min: resort guests are admitted for Early Theme Park Entry. Off-site guests are usually held at the same tapstiles until official opening.
  4. 4T-0: walk, do not run, to the ride you chose. Cast members will stop runners and you gain nothing.
  5. 5First 60 to 90 minutes: standby only, two or three attractions in the same land.
  6. 610:00 AM onward: your first Lightning Lane window opens. Now you are cycling paid passes while standby lines grow.

What to rope drop, by park

Pick the ride that (a) will have the longest standby by mid-morning and (b) you do not already hold a Lightning Lane for. Which attractions are Single Pass, Multi Pass or virtual queue rotates, so confirm in the app the night before.

Rope drop with a young family

Skip the headliner sprint. Be there at opening anyway, but go to the land your kids care about while everyone else is in the headliner queue. Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom and Toy Story Land at Hollywood Studios empty out for the first thirty minutes because the crowd is elsewhere.

Questions people ask

Does rope drop still work when Disney opens the park early?+

Yes. Disney frequently admits guests 15 to 30 minutes before the posted time. Arriving on the posted time means arriving late.

Should I rope drop or sleep in and buy Multi Pass?+

Both, if you can. The combination is what makes a day feel line-free. If you must choose, rope drop is free and a well-executed one is worth two or three paid passes.
